The new hp6515 at TechEd

Hpim0387_large_web_view_1 There have been reports a couple people are wandering around TechEd that have the HP unreleased h6500 Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition.

Well one of those people came by to see me today and showed off his. So a big "THANKS" for stopping by to listen to my session talk on "Using Windows Mobilie" in the Community Cabana area. He let me get a quick photo of the device. He also let me show it off during the talk and I have to say it really is a wonderful form factor. HP really went after the people that like the Blackberry size complete with its square screen format. I wanted to compare it to the Treo 650 to give you a concept of size. For me the keyboard is much easier to use than the Treo since it has better spacing but still I love the fact you have a choice of using handwriting input on the screen via Transciber. What do you think? This will be a fun one to write an article on comparing the "Best of the Breed" for converged devices. :-)

Tech Help @ TechEd

Here are a couple of attendees at my session showing off their Windows Mobile devices. I got to help out a guy from Orlando that was having a little trouble setting up his bluetooth phone to act as his wireless modem to his Dell X50v Pocket PC. It only took a couple of minutes and now he is a happy camper.

Hey Dale,

What are the thoughts from folks around TechEd on the h6500? Do many people anticipate compatibility problems with 3rd party software, and the square screen resolution?

Dave, I didn't even think of asking if he was having any issues with apps because of the square screen. I may not be able to find him tomorrow in time to ask but I will give it a whirl and if I do hear anything I will get it posted.

What cell phone was he having a problem with? Can't get my Smartphones (SMT5600 and MPX220) to act as a modem for my X50. I have a report that the SMT should work fine, and one that indicates an initialization string is required for the MPX that is too long for the box MS provided. Just wondered what you got it to work with. Was no sweat with a T610 BTW. Just problems with two WM devices ;(

Sven, He was using the AudioVox SMT5600. I basically deleted his existing bluetooth pairings on both devices. I then setup the phone in discover mode and then allowed the X50v to find it using the generic find device wizard (not the DUN one). I then established a pairing and bonded successfully. The other issue he had was the My Connection that he did was defined incorrectly so I deleted it totally and configured a new Connection. I used the basic *99# as the number to dial and then configured it with blanks for user and password (set password to enable the SAVE) and away it went. :-)

Thanks Dale. I actually got it working this weekend, X50v thru SMT5600. I had tried deleting, changing, DUN and plain, many times. This weekend I just hard rest the Axim and did the pairing and BT modem first thing. Worked fine. loaded the BT drivers for my HP stereo headphones, worked fine. modem still fine. Loaded the TO keyboard stuff, it and everything else works fine. Loaded all the usual software back. Everything still fine. Beats me. TO Mouse doesn't work though. Think the mouse is bad. In discoverable mode, neither my desktop or Axim even see it. Now if I could just get my car BT sets to work with MS Smartphones...I'd be a happy man.

By a coincident, I found Your website. I was looking for news about HP6515.
I do have a Orange SPV E200 smartphone with MS 2003 (vers. 4.20.0).
Plus an Acer N35 with MS 2003.
I am using the E200 as a modem in combination with a laptop, connected via IR, at work.
No problems at all, except the speed.
Neither the E200 or the handheld can communicate. In fact they can see eachother but nothing happens. I have discussed the problem with Orange's techn. dept, Acer DK and some clever guys at www.pocketfreak.dk
No one has been able to help me out. All settings are checked/renewed several times, but still no action.
Further, it is not possible to "beam" documents or pics between the two units even they does see eachother.
Would You be able to help me out ?

Dale,

If you don't have a Treo 650 to compare it to, I may be able to help. I've have my Treo since February. I like it BUT... the memory's way too small and the OS manages it poorly and the OS is not as flexible nor open as the PocketPC environment. The up side it that I can carry MyBible for the Palm OS plus Documents to Go (Dataviz) to take notes on. The PocketPC version (PocketBible) is far richer as a Bible study tool. I have an unlocked 6315 but carry the Treo becaause of the form factor. I'm sure I'm a 6515 candidate as soon as the price gets more reasonable for the unlocked version.

I bought a hp6515 in Bangkok and am using it in India. Having a severe compatibility problem with my cellular service provider. The calls do not go through, when I dial the message says operation failed, when i try to select a network manually, it tries for a couple of minutes and then says cant find network, disconnect your data connection.
Worst is people cant call me, cause the service provider says unavilable.
I have changed the SIM twice, hope someone can help
